The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) today warned that a massive island-wide strike will be launched by trade unions at all state institutions on May 21 if the government fails to completely withdraw the new electricity tariffs.JVP member and trade unionist K.D. Lalkantha said that the government has time till May 20 to cancel the new tariffs. He said that trade unions will not accept concessions or amendments to the electricity tariff structure but instead want it completely removed. He warned that if the government fails to meet the deadline then trade unions in all state sectors including the estate workers will go on strike.President Mahinda Rajapaksa announced today that electricity tariffs will not be increased for consumers who use less that 60 units per month. He also said that concessions will be given to consumers who use less that 180 units of electricity a month.The President made the announcement at the UPFA May Day rally held in Colombo this evening.The Public Utilities Commission (PUCSL) had last month approved the new electricity tariff.
