Major Force is ready to win

first_imgTOMORROW is St Leger Day at Caymanas Park, and SHE’S A MANEATER, this year’s outstanding three-year-old, is on the brink of history. The Wayne DaCosta-trained filly can become the 11th Triple Crown winner at the Park if she wins the St Leger, tomorrow’s 11th race on the 12-race card. It appears that nothing will stop her. The Winston Kong-owned-and-bred filly has dominated her rivals all season and should become the third filly to take the Triple Crown at Caymanas Park after Simply Magic (2002) and Alsafra (2008). As usual, we look at the Sunrise-6 on the Saturday race card. It begins with a 600 metres event, which should be a straight battle between the Anthony Nunes-trained second-time runner, APOLLO BAY, and Philip Feanny’s first-timer, EXHILARATE. The former has been training well and clocked 35.4 for second on his debut, but EXHILARATE looks the one to beat. The filly (by Blue Pepsi Lodge – Purejoy) is a half-sister to the progressive Fort Knox and has shown enough on the exercise track to make a winning debut. Race two looks tailored for MAJOR FORCE, who was beaten by Newton’s First Law over 1820 metres on June 24. The Anthony Ferguson-trained four-year-old was ahead of just under half of tomorrow’s field in that race and only has DUSSELDORF to fear. DUSSELDORF was the favourite in the June 24 event, but tailed off and ended third after being prominent for the 1400 metres. The third over 1820 metres for the $250-210,000 claiming group is a gift for LATE N DRAFTY, who is dropping from $450,000 claiming to contest her pet event. On June 17, LATE N DRAFTY whipped $350,000 claimers by four lengths over tomorrow’s distance and comes back with almost the identical weight at a lower level. She should not be beaten. Speedy DREAMLINER has come down from overnight allowance to contest the fourth. The four-year-old colt is definitely the fastest in the line-up and will have to be caught. SUNRISE-6 SELECTIONS Race five is a very knotty event for three-year-old maidens over 1200 metres. EDDIE’S PRINCESS, NUCLEOUS BUTCHER and SILVER ROCKET all have strong chances. The one I like best, however, is SILVER ROCKET, who was caught stealing home by Jolly D on July 1. The pace tomorrow will be milder and I expect the Steven Todd-trained gelding to go all the way. PIANO MAN is the one to beat in race six. The four-year-old gelding has been campaigning and doing well in far better company than he will face tomorrow and even with top weight 57kg will prove too good for a mostly out-of-form $180,000 claiming field. 1. Arsenal beat Chelsea, win Community Shield

first_img Made amends LONDON (AP): Arsenal will start the English Premier League (EPL) season on a high note after mastering the experimental ABBA penalty shootout pattern to beat Chelsea to the Community Shield. Wembley Stadium provided the biggest stage yet for global trials with the format that mixes up the order of penalties rather than spotkicks alternating between teams A and B. The long-standing system was deemed by football’s lawmaking body to be handing an unfair advantage to the team going first. And going second in the rejigged shootout, Arsenal overwhelmed Chelsea 4-1 to win the traditional curtain raiser to the English season after the match was locked at 1-1 after 90 minutes. “We showed great composure to come back to the game,” Arsenal goalkeeper Petr Cech said, “then it is penalties and who keeps their cool better.” Only six penalties were required between Premier League champion Chelsea and FA Cup holder Arsenal. Gary Cahill got Chelsea off to a perfect start before Theo Walcott and Nacho Monreal responded by finding the target for Arsenal. But Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois blazed his kick over the crossbar followed by striker Alvaro Morata also missing. Arsenal duo Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Olivier Giroud then converted their kicks in succession to ensure the north London club started the new season just as it finished the last one by beating Chelsea at Wembley. Just like in the FA Cup final, Chelsea was reduced to 10 men. Victor Moses, who was sent off in the May showpiece, made amends this time by putting Chelsea in front a minute into the second half by getting on the end of Cahill’s header. “Even though we were 1-0 down we didn’t panic and kept control of our game and came back,” Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said. Arsenal gained a man advantage with 10 minutes to go when Pedro Rodriguez, wearing a mask after being injured on Chelsea’s pre-season tour of Asia, was dismissed for a studs-up sliding challenge on Mohamed Elneny. It proved even costlier when the resulting free kick by Granit Xhaka was headed in by new defensive signing Sead Kolasinac, sending the game into the shootout. “Physically he is naturally very strong,” Wenger said of Kolasinac, who was a free recruit after being out of contract at Schalke. “We have players pumped up in the gym and players who were born strong. And he was the second part.”last_img read more

Grange has big plans for Trelawny Stadium

first_img SPORTS TOURISM Sport minister Olivia Grange has said that the Government has “big plans” for the upgrading of the Trelawny Stadium. Grange made the announcement while speaking at the Jamaica Tallawahs’ official team brunch at the Melbourne Cricket Club on Thursday, and said the work will be treated as one of Jamaica’s 55th Independence anniversary legacy projects. One upgrade completed so far is on the venue’s irrigation system. “We do not have to depend on the National Water Commission anymore for water. We have our own water,” Grange said. The Government plans to meet with the Planning Institute of Jamaica next week to discuss sources of funding for a cricket academy, which is planned to be the first phase of expansion to be carried out on the stadium. But the minister said that the stadium can be used in its current state. “Sri Lanka, when they come later this year, will use the Trelawny Stadium for warm-up matches,” she said. “So the facility is in a good enough condition that we can use it as we speak.” The Government is looking to invest in the stadium as a means of improving sport tourism in western Jamaica. Grange said that she is also seeking more sponsors for the project and Tallawahs owner Jay Madhu immediately raised his hand to show his interest. “I want to encourage the owners of the Tallawahs to put some packages together,” Grange said. “We have enough rooms near the Trelawny Stadium. So you can utilise the facility. One complaint that has been raised about the facility is that there is not enough business activity taking place in the community surrounding the stadium. However, Grange said that the location is not as isolated as many think. “I can’t speak to the other plans at this time, but it’s just a matter of how we utilise the facility and how we make it attractive because it’s the Jamaica Cricket Association’s base,” she said. “We have people who are into running and health – the whole health programme – that use the facility. I know there are plans for the development of villas and other such facilities in and around the area. So the potential is great, and it’s really going to be a major development and will have tremendous impact on the communities around.” The Trelawny Stadium cost around US$30 million to build and was opened in 2007 to host the commencement ceremony of the ICC Cricket World Cup. It has since been used occasionally for warm-up games for both the men’s and women’s West Indies cricket teams, football matches, and entertainment events such as the Jamaica Jazz and Blues Festival. However, public opinion is that the venue is fairly underused.last_img read more

Guyana remain out front with easy win

first_imgPORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad (CMC): Guyana comfortably disposed of Jamaica by 31 runs to remain out front in the Regional Under-17 Championship, with one round remaining. Playing at Gilbert Park on Monday, Guyana rallied to 174 for seven off their 50 overs after being sent in, with opener Sachin Singh top-scoring with 48 and Andre Seepersaud getting 38 and Leon Swamy, 25. Singh faced 99 deliveries and struck two fours and three sixes but perished in the 33rd over with a half-century in sight. In reply, Jamaica lost Oneil Roberts without a run on the board in the opening over but recovered through the efforts of Daniel Beckford who stroked an unbeaten 73. He faced 149 balls and counted two fours but received little support and Jamaica collapsed to 143 all out in the penultimate over of the innings. Left-arm spinner Niran Bissu picked up three for 15 while Leon Swamy (2-13) and Seepersaud (2-17) finished with two wickets apiece. At the National Cricket Centre, Barbados remained in striking distance of the leaders in second when they crushed Leeward Islands by 130 runs. Sent in, Barbados benefited from half-centuries from Matthew Forde (68) and Antonio Morris (50), while Jaden Leacock struck an unbeaten 42, to get up to 245 for seven off their 50 overs. Batting at number six, Forde added 65 for the fifth wicket with Morris before adding a further 71 for the sixth with Leacock. Forde struck three fours and a six off 87 deliveries while Morris faced 72 balls and counted three boundaries. The Leewards were then restricted to 115 all out in the 34th over with new-ball bowler Jayden Hoyte claiming three for 29. Hosts Trinidad and Tobago were also in winning form as they trounced Windward Islands by 151 runs under the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern Method. They piled up an imposing 259 for seven off their 50 overs, behind Isaiah Gomez’s top score of 66, with Antonio Gomez hitting 49 and Tariq Mohammed, 43. Set a revised target of 224 off 28 overs, the Windwards were dismissed for 72 in the 26th, with left-arm spinner Nicholas Ali wrecking the innings with four for 25 and speedster Jaden Seales supporting with three for five.last_img read more

Modern ways…

first_img…in school disciplineith our little darlings about to return to school (and out of our hair) our Education Ministers (there’s two of them) huddled with “stakeholders” in a parley designed to improve the “deliverables” with the largest chunk of spending in the budget – $43 billion! The kids and their parents weren’t invited to the discussions so one can assume they’re either not “stakeholders” or this was above their pay grade.Anyhow, your Eyewitness was particularly interested in the Senior Minister – Dr Roopnarine – explaining that the new focus in the schools will be on extracurricular activities – sports, physical education and music – and “discipline”. Evidently the Welfare Department will be strengthened to impart “modern means of carrying out discipline in schools”. Even though he thought our challenge were “Maths and English”, your Eyewitness will pass over the extracurricular activities for now. He must confess he experiences a certain frisson whenever he sees the word “discipline” and “children” in the same sentence.Your Eyewitness, you see dear reader, is a product of the fag end of the “spare the rod and spoil the child” philosophy in pedagogy. And he can assure you that the rod – the “wild cane, in his instance – was scarcely spared! He suspects the Senior Education Minister (SEM) – who appears to be QUITE senior – must’ve come through the education system when it wasn’t too far removed from the penal system. Both were intended to literally whip the inmates into (an obedient) state! No “education as socialisation” namby-pamby for the SEM!So we’re rather intrigued by his proposed “modern means” of instilling discipline. Maybe he has the US experience – of which he has a first-hand immersion – in mind? But he would know – after the permissive seventies when the Americans encouraged their little darlings to “be themselves”, they were discovered to actually be little devils!! Metal detectors for knives and dogs for drugs became standard school paraphernalia. So the Americans are now gravitating to the “zero tolerance” approach: strict rules of behaviour are made very clear and after three strikes, the miscreant kid’s out like Flash! But the SEM doesn’t have to go all the way to the States to see Zero Tolerance in operation. He should just mosey over to the Swami school over on the West Coast – the one’s that’s been giving Queens College a run for its money. But the SEM should know the key to “Zero Tolerance” on discipline is the kids must practically be guaranteed success at their exams. This way, most parents line up to enrol their little darlings and ensure they stick to the straight and narrow. So, we’re back to the teachers, no?…on returnsMost folks today wouldn’t remember, but there was a time when all Guyanese “recycled”: not just their soda (“sweet drinks”?) bottles, but also rum bottles – which at that time outnumbered the former! The recycling drive didn’t come from any government pushing “environmentalism”, but from the mundane fact that it was cheaper for the “beverage industry” to pay folks to return the glass bottles than buying new ones! With the advent of plastic bottles, these cost so little, it wasn’t worth the while for manufacturers to purchase empties. And pretty soon, this practice resulted in the non-biodegradable plastic bottles polluting the environment as it presently does – including clogging canals! But in the US, they solved the problem by mandating a 5 cents consumer deposit on beverages bottles that can be redeemed when the bottle is redeemed. With the slogan “Don’t trash ‘em – cash ‘em!” their environmental problem is solved. But not ours where a tax was just introduced as a revenue raising measure on the manufacturer.Expect the same pollution and the tax to be passed on to the customer!…of thievingIn the past, fellas would resort to “choke and rob” when they were short of dough. The latest (electric contract) scandal with the Public Infrastructure Ministry is just the modern version of “choke and rob”.last_img read more
